Broadband Light Therapy

What is BBL Forever Young?

BBL treatment is not a laser treatment. It uses intense pulsed light instead of the more focused light of a laser. Laser treatments are a single wavelength, while BBL uses a broad spectrum of light that we can filter several different ways to treat different conditions. It also treats a larger area of skin than a laser.

Broadband Light (BBL) is used to treat vascular lesions such as cherry angiomas, acne, rosacea, brown spots, redness, fine lines and wrinkles, and uneven tone and texture. Each of these issues resides at a different level in the skin; the wavelengths of the light can be adjusted to reach a specific area. This treatment is more superficial than an ablative laser, which results in less downtime and faster healing.

Treatments send light rays into the deepest layers of your skin to help reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation, invigorate your skin, and boost your body's natural ability to fight signs of aging.

As the upper layers of skin absorb the heat and energy from the light, pigmented skin cells are destroyed and superficial blood vessels in the area are closed off. The light's energy and heat also trigger a natural wound-healing response that will generate new cells and boost new collagen

What is BBL Forever Clear?

Forever Clear BBL uses a combination of blue, yellow, and infrared light to eliminate bacteria, reduce inflammation, and promote the body's natural healing process to clear acne.

BBL (BroadBand Light) for the use in Acne Treatment utilizes light to destroy or minimize P. acnes bacteria, reduce inflammation, and minimize over production of sebaceous oil glands. This therapy may utilize multiple BBL filters (420 nm, 560 nm, 590 nm) to target selectively the P. acnes bacteria and sebaceous oil glands. The goal is to pack the skin with light to impact the entire pilosebaceous unit.

What is the difference between BBL and IPL?

IPL uses a range of 500-1200nm which is smaller than BBLs range of 400-1400nm. A wider range is more thorough because it means BBL can treat more superficially and deeper in order to treat a wider range of concerns.

BBL will layer wavelengths vs IPL which only uses one wavelength at a time. IPL can safely treat Fitzpatrick skin types I-III, where BBL can safely treat skin types I-V.

Contraindications

BBL is not advised in anyone with a history of seizure disorders. History of skin cancer and/or melanoma need to have been seen by their dermatologist within the last six months. BBL cannot be used over tattoos or permanent makeup.

Recommendations

For BBL Forever Clear most patients require a series of 4 to 6 sessions to start, spaced 1-2 weeks apart with quarterly or semi-annual visits after that.

For BBL Forever Young most clients require 3 to 5 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart, with annual maintenance treatments after that.

Before your BBL treatment, you need to prepare your skin. It's important that your skin is not tanned. Avoid direct sunlight or tanning beds for 4 weeks before and 2 weeks after each session.

Don't use sunless tanner for at least 4 weeks before your treatment. For at least 1 week before BBL, avoid waxing, chemical peels, and products containing retinol, salicylic acid, or glycolic acid.

Talk with your doctor to make sure it's safe to stop taking any prescribed medications that cause photosensitivity, which is extreme sensitivity to UV light. If you have frequent cold sores, your doctor may prescribe an antiviral medication a few days before your session.

There is generally very little downtime associated with BBL treatments. Patients may experience mild redness and/or swelling of the skin. Those patients getting treatment for dark spots and hyperpigmentation will experience a temporary darkening of those spots, which then flake and fade away within 1-2 weeks.
